Today's websites are built by people with technical expertise. A number sites look really great, with all the high-tech wizardry the technical people can possibly cram into them. Websites often contain flash movies, sounds, menus that do funny things, links with drop down effects, scroll down menus and other options.
Frequently, clients who do not use internet often enough will encounter a website that requires them to download a program in order to use it. This can be time-consuming, so they might decide not to download it and opt to try another site instead. What the clients are looking for are quick results. They want the site to open quickly and they want to be able to use it right away. They want to know immediately if the website can give them the information they are looking for. Then if it can, they may click around to learn more about the product or service, or go further and purchase it.
Put your customer first, work with them in mind, and don't write long pages of words and more words. Add some eye-catching graphics to break up the long pages. Write visually striking headlines, then introduce your product. Give the customer the choice to take action: to read about your product in detail, to purchase it, to ask for a quote or do something else -- don’t leave the poor customer guessing what to do next.
On some websites you will see suggested readings, which are not only helpful to the customer, but also help to build better internal linking.
You should look at your site with your prospective customers in mind. Think about what your visitors may be looking for. If you can, ask someone else to go to your site and then observe them as they navigate your site and see how they search for information on it. You might be surprised.
Many Internet users are less skilled at using the web that you think. They might require detailed instructions each step of the way. Just observe and notice how many steps they take in order for them to find what they are looking for. It may surprise you that what appears very simple may not be so for a person who is not familiar with your website.

Remember the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle -- make your site professional, but simple to use, too. Have a clear idea about who your prospective customers are, and then design your website keeping their needs in mind.
You should make your website easy to explore, easy for your customers to find items they are looking for, easy to locate the information they seek, and most especially, easy to make a purchase.
